Ghorepani is a small village which is located in the Annapurna Conservation Area. This is a short, easy trek, making it suitable for all age groups and levels of ability or experience. The trek is sometimes also referred to as the Poon Hill trek, as the highest elevation on the route is at the top of the hill, at 3,210m above sea level.
The hill is only a short distance away from Ghorepani. Once there, you will be able to see Annapurna I (8,091m), Dhaulagiri (8,167m) and others. You will also be able to see a rich variety of Nepal’s flora and fauna – much of which thrive at these comparatively lower altitudes, including the national flower, the rhododendron.
The trek starts from Nayapul, which is a short drive from luxurious Pokhara. You will follow the Mardi river North, before arriving at Birethati. From here, you will walk through the valley of the Mardi river to Bhurung Khola (stream). Teashops and lodges mark the route at regular intervals, and you will stop at Ghandruk, a Gurung village. Here, there is a cultural museum, which will teach you many interesting things about the Gurung people, focussing especially on their role in Gurkha regiments around the world.
If you choose to undertake this trek in February and March, you will be treated to the sight of beautiful, blooming rhododendron bushes – the flower of which is Nepal’s national symbol. This is a truly wonderful trek, and is especially well-suited to those who do not have time to take up a longer route.
