Trekking in Langtang Region

Langtang Valley

Langtang is one of the nearest trekking destinations from Kathmandu, and comprises a mixture of natural beauty and unforgettable cultural experiences. At about 130km North of Kathmandu, it is close to the border with Tibet, and was established as Nepal’s first national park. The highest peaks in the area are Langtang Lirung (7,245m), theGanja La pass (5,122m), Jugal Himal and Dorje Lakpa (6,989m).

Trekking in this area appeals to many as the area is not visited by as many tourists as, say, the Everest or Annapurna regions. Therefore, you’ll be treated to equally spectacular scenery, without having to contend with the crowds. The area is dominated ethnically by the Tamangs, who are legendary for their welcoming of tourists to the area, their craftsmanship and dress. There are also more than 70 glaciers in the area, including Gosainkunda, Parvatikunda and many more. You’ll also be able to trek through sub-alpine forests, and interact with a variety of wildlife, including birds, deer, monkeys and more.

The beginning of any trek in Langtang will take you along the Langtang river, which runs straight through the valley. You will cut across this on trail bridges on a number of occasions before any ascent in the area.

Despite its proximity to Kathmandu, the Langtang region is as wild as the Tibetan highlands, and is known for its idyllic rural landscape. The people living in the highlands here are of Tibetan origin, and these cultural influences are evident in their dress, appearance and way of life. You’ll see waterfalls, rhododendron, bamboo forests, and a wide variety of vegetation native to the area.
